Plain Cylindrical Gages
Plain cylindrical gauges measure the diameter of an unthreaded hole or shaft to ensure parts meet specifications and fall within designated tolerances. These metrology tools are widely used across industries that require precise, accurate sizing. Plain cylindrical gauges simply confirm if a part dimension is in or out of tolerance.
At Gage Assembly Company, we offer a wide range of high-quality plain cylindrical plug and ring gauges designed to meet your measurement needs.
What Is a Plain Gage?
Plain plug gages usually consist of hardened, wear-resistant steel to ensure stability and minimal variation in size over time. Hardened chrome finishes are also available. The grip or handle in the center of the gage is usually made from aluminum or another softer metal.
Gauges use a classification system of letters that describes the tolerances to which they are manufactured, also called a gaugemaker’s tolerance, as outlined in ANSI/ASME B89.1.5. This indicates how closely they, in turn, gauge or measure a component.
Gage Assembly offers plain cylindrical plug and ring gauges in class XX through class Z.
Types of Plain Gages
There are two broad categories of plain gages:
- Plain ring gages. These gages can be used during part production or upon final inspection for quality assurance. Master ring gages can be used to set electronic gages, air gages and mechanical gages.
- Plain plug gages. The “Go” end of the gage should enter or engage the part, and the “Not-go” end of the gage should not enter or engage.
Within the larger category of plain plug gauges, there are three common types of plug gauges:
- Taperlock gages. This gage style has a tapered shank that is firmly pressed into an aluminum handle with a corresponding tapered hole. Once these gages are worn beyond their respective gage makers tolerance they must be replaced. Gage members can be removed or inserted into the handle.
- Reversible gages. These gage members can be removed, flipped, and reinserted into the handle when one end is worn.
- Trilock gages. Trilock gage assemblies are often used for larger diameters. The gage members are reversible; however, they are also bolted into the handle for extra stability.
Applications of Plain Gages
Plain gages are utilized in a variety of industries, including:
- Plumbing.
- Automotive.
- Agriculture.
- Manufacturing.
- Defense.
